Importance of trade fairs to local economy discussed at media lunch

Journalists met with AsiaWorld-Expo and Global Sources chiefs on the sidelines of the popular China Sourcing Fairs. A main topic of conversation was the impact the new infrastructure projects further connecting Hong Kong with the Pearl River Delta would have on the city’s trade fair industry.

Over a media luncheon held on 22 April, Mr. Allen Ha, Chief Executive Officer of AsiaWorld-Expo, Ms. Sarah Benecke, Executive Director of Global Sources and Mr. Tommy Wong, General Manager of Global Sources, shared the latest developments and their views on the importance of the MICE industry in Hong Kong.

"Currently, AsiaWorld-Expo accounts for almost a third of Hong Kong's exhibition market. Overall it brings around HK$8 billion of economic benefit to the local economy on an annual basis and has created some 18,000 jobs,” Mr. Ha said.

Mr. Ha said he saw room for further growth, supported by the development plans of the Mainland and Hong Kong governments. These include major infrastructure projects such as the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, scheduled for completion in 2015, and the Hong Kong-Shenzhen Airport Link.

“These transport infrastructure projects further link AsiaWorld-Expo and Hong Kong’s International Airport into an enlarged trading and business hub across the dynamic Pearl River Delta region, putting our venue in an ideal location to lead the growth in the local exhibition and conference industry,” explained
Mr. Ha.

Echoing Mr. Ha’s comments, Ms. Benecke said the bridge and airport link would help more mainland exhibitors participate in  AsiaWorld-Expo shows, and make it easier for buyers to travel to suppliers and factories in Southern China.

Speaking  about  the China  Sourcing  Fairs : Electronics  &  Components, Ms. Benecke said the electronics and components fair was the fourth largest in the world with over 2,500 booths and 1,900 exhibitors from 14 countries and territories. “This April, we welcomed almost 28,000 international buyers and hosted Asia’s largest “In-car Electronics’ and ‘GPS’ pavilions in Asia,” she added.

Major buyers came from global names such as 3M, Carrefour, Sanyo, Hitachi, Mattel, Panasonic, IBM, Siemens and Toshiba.

The last in the series of China Sourcing Fairs is currently being held at AsiaWorld-Expo featuring ‘Gifts & Premiums’, ‘Fashion Accessories’ and ‘Underwear & Swimwear’.

Pearl River Delta transport links put AsiaWorld-Expo at the heart of the future economic hub

As global businesses assess the impact of the economic downturn, attention has shifted to which regions will lead the recovery. Asia, and in particular China, is attracting strong attention. To ensure that Hong Kong is primed to benefit from these opportunities, the local government is stepping up the pace on a number of infrastructure projects that will further accelerate economic integration between Hong Kong and Mainland China. These include the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, the Hong Kong-Shenzhen Airport Link and the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link.

The Hong Kong terminals of the former two projects have been proposed to be located adjacent to the Hong Kong International Airport, ensuring the regional transport links are seamlessly fed into the international aviation network.  AsiaWorld-Expo, located alongside this award-winning airport, is set to benefit substantially from the enlarged and efficient network.

Upon completion of the bridge in 2015, it will take just 30 minutes to get from the Hong Kong airport to Zhuhai, making it much faster and more convenient than by sea or via Shenzhen.  In addition, with the proposed Tuen Mun-Chek Lap Kok Link and Tuen Mun Western Bypass, travelling time from Hong Kong airport to Shenzhen will be no more than 30 minutes.

The transport links are set to further transform the area surrounding the Hong Kong International Airport, bringing the vibrant cities on the west coast of the Zhujiang (Pearl River), such as Zhongshan and Jiangmen, within easy reach of this vibrant business and trading hub.

AsiaWorld-Expo – already a vital platform for exhibitors and buyers interested in China – will benefit substantially from the enhanced business flows and exposure, creating yet another reason for exhibitors and buyers from China and from the rest of the world to gather at the venue to explore new opportunities.

Adding to the appeal of AsiaWorld-Expo, the venue already enjoys a prime location on Lantau Island, the largest island of Hong Kong. Complementing its extensive exhibition and conference facilities, the 70,000 square metre venue has a range of five star hotels, and shopping, dining and entertainment options within easy reach. This combination of venue, hotels and leisure attractions have helped to establish AsiaWorld-Expo as a premium trade exhibition, conference and banqueting venue in the region.

AsiaWorld-Expo is set to benefit substantially from the ambitious infrastructure projects which will further integrate the economies of
Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta cities.
