92nd UFI Global Congress Opens at AsiaWorld-Expo

Over 600 Global Exhibition Leaders Convene in Hong Kong,
Reinforcing the City’s Appeal as The Premier Hub for Mega Events

The 92nd UFI Global Congress, the exhibition industry’s largest global meeting of the year, officially opened on 19 November at AsiaWorld-Expo (AWE). Returning to Hong Kong after 25 years, the Congress underscores the city’s internationally recognised position as a premier MICE hub and injects fresh momentum into the MICE development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). Under the theme “Shaping the Future”, this four-day event (19–22 November) brings together over 600 top-level executives from more than 50 countries and regions. In addition to representatives from Chinese Mainland, Europe, the US, the Middle East and the Asia-Pacific, this year’s edition also attracts leaders from South America, Africa and Eastern Europe, who gather to explore new opportunities and drive collaboration for a shared future.

Ms. Irene Chan, Chief Executive Officer of AsiaWorld-Expo.

Industry Leaders Assemble to Pioneer New Opportunities

The Opening Ceremony on 20th November was officiated by Mr Paul Chan, Financial Secretary of the HKSAR, with addresses delivered by Mr Fred Lam, Chairman of the Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK); Dr Peter Lam, Chairman of the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB); and Mr Hugh Jones, UFI’s President. In the opening remarks, Mr Chan noted: “At its core, exhibitions are about forging business connections and promoting trade in products and services. Your choice of the AsiaWorld-Expo as the congress venue speaks volumes about your focus on connectivity. The Hong Kong International Airport is the gateway to the Chinese Mainland, the broader Asian region and beyond, with over 1,100 flights to over 200 destinations every day. Indeed, Hong Kong’s role has always been a “super connector”. Under the “one country, two systems” framework, we enjoy convenient and sometimes priority access to the Chinese Mainland market, while maintaining the characteristics that define our success as an international trade, business and financial hub.”

AWE continues to strengthen Hong Kong's leading position as the "Asia's Events Capital" through facility upgrades and diversification of event offerings. As Mr Fred Lam remarked in his speech: “Connectivity is one of AWE’s strengths, as it is located right next to Hong Kong International Airport, which connects to over 200 destinations worldwide. AWE also benefits from its strategic location at the bridgehead of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge and therefore provides an effective platform for establishing a foothold in this important market (GBA).  Looking ahead, AWE is developing a new state-of-the-art arena, we believe it will complement and enhance the attractiveness of the many exhibitions and conferences being hosted here. The expanded AWE is also an integral part of the Airport City project, called SKYTOPIA. We are confident that with the completion of SKYTOPIA, Hong Kong’s position as the region’s exhibition and conference hub will be further enhanced.”

This year's UFI Global Congress has not only allowed industry professionals to experience Hong Kong's strategic geographical advantages firsthand, but has also provided global exhibition leaders with an opportunity to rediscover the city. HKTB Chairman Dr Peter Lam remarked, “We are thrilled that the UFI Global Congress has returned to Hong Kong after 25 years to celebrate UFI’s centenary. This year’s Congress holds special significance; it is both an honour and a testament to our city’s enduring position as the “World’s Meeting Place”. Combined with business-friendly policies, world-class infrastructure, professional services and unique GBA opportunity, Hong Kong continues to attract international business events across the region. Moreover, Hong Kong goes beyond being just a business hub – the city boasts a year-round calendar of world-class mega events, enlivening it with delightful activities, exclusive festive attractions and irresistible experiences. I invite global industry leaders to explore beyond the conference halls and immerse themselves in Hong Kong”.

Mr. Paul Chan, the Financial Secretary of HKSAR supported the event as the Guest of Honour.

Mr. Fred Lam, Chairman of AAHK, stated that AWE Phase 2 will create more opportunities and synergies.

Dr. Peter Lam, Chairman of HKTB, stated that the UFI Global Congress allows global exhibition leaders to personally experience Hong Kong's strategic geographical advantages.

From Business Exchange to Cultural Discovery

To showcase an immersive Hong Kong experience, AWE integrated dynamic local elements into the programme, offering a fresh perspective on business-event hospitality. With the theme of “Culinary Delights, Artisanal Crafts, and Cultural Experiences,” delegates enjoyed Cantonese delicacies, dim sum demonstrations, Hong Kong’s iconic red-white-blue cultural motifs, mahjong experiences, and locally designed art pieces.

A dedicated “Culture Zone” featured a red-white-blue HK theme and mahjong experience. The iconic red-white-blue motif symbolises Hong Kong’s hardworking and adaptable spirit, while Cantonese mahjong – a game of strategy and foresight – reflects the exhibition industry’s commitment to “Stay Resilient, Connect the World.”

Through live dim sum-making demonstrations, the unique culinary charm of Hong Kong as a food paradise was showcased to delegates from around the world.

AsiaWorld-Expo’s catering team showcased the depth of Chinese culinary culture and created a memorable experience for delegates

AsiaWorld-Expo specially invited a local illustrator to design themed postcards showcasing Hong Kong’s food, culture, and arts. Delegates could also capture memories with bespoke AR filters, blending art and technology into a unique and interactive exhibition experience.

Infusing Leisure into Business Travel with Hong Kong Tourism Board

In collaboration with the Hong Kong Tourism Board, AWE capitalized on the gathering of global industry leaders to promote bleisure tourism, enhancing Hong Kong’s appeal as an international MICE and travel hub. Many delegates arrived early or extended their stay, generating additional economic benefits while immersing themselves in the city. AWE curated a series of cultural, artistic, and city experiences, including a Congress Dinner at M+ in the West Kowloon Cultural District and the highly popular “Tram Party in Hong Kong,” which allowed delegates to experience the city’s unique blend of heritage and modern vibrancy. Delegates were also invited to Lan Kwai Fong to enjoy Hong Kong’s signature nightlife. In addition, post-congress tours with themed exploration routes were offered, encouraging delegates to further discover Hong Kong’s local culture, iconic landmarks, and natural ecology.

GBA Thematic Session: Spotlight on Asia’s Key Growth Engine

A major highlight is the Host Session, themed “Gateway to Growth: Unleashing Opportunities in the Greater Bay Area.” Leaders from Hong Kong, Macao, Zhuhai, and other key GBA cities shared insights and best practices, showcasing the region’s enormous development potential. Hong Kong continues to play the role of the “Double Gateway” to the world and the Greater Bay Area, attracting international exhibitions and major events to Hong Kong and the GBA, while supporting Chinese Mainland and local enterprises in expanding abroad. The Congress is expected to facilitate multiple cross-regional collaborations.

Driven by the thriving mega-event economy, the 92nd UFI Global Congress is set to generate significant synergies, drawing visitors to immerse themselves in Hong Kong's dynamic energy and vibrancy. This landmark event further reinforces the city's position as a premier international hub for mega events and forward-looking collaborations.

Mr. Simon Li, Chairman of AWE and Ms Irene Chan, CEO of AWE, received a commemorative plaque from UFI representatives, symbolizing the significance of AWE as the host venue.

The venue encompasses multiple zones. In addition to various seminars, the exhibition area showcases the latest technologies and innovative services shaping the MICE future.

Over 600 top-level executives from the exhibition industry, representing more than 50 countries and regions, gathered at the AsiaWorld-Expo to gain insights into various MICE topics.
